Significant changes are on the horizon for Qantas Frequent Flyer members. A new exclusivity agreement means that from 19 November 2010 onwards, members will only get car hire discounts and perks when renting with Avis and Budget. So for anyone that favours Hertz or Thrifty, you’ll still be eligible to collect points for rentals that are completed by 18 November 2010, but after that, no more.

This move is supposed to be beneficial. QFF says it will allow them to offer a higher level of offers from their exclusive partners, thereby maximizing savings for their members. However, the obvious major drawback is that we are now limited to a choice of only two car hire companies instead of four.

As a sign of goodwill perhaps, to kick things off, all Australian car rentals three days or more from Avis or Budget that are picked up by 31 October 2010 will earn you an extra bonus 1,000 points on top of the usual points. Below we’ve listed the promotional codes you’ll have to enter to receive this bonus:

Bonus 1,000 Extra Qantas Frequent Flyer Points

Avis coupon code: MPPA074
Budget coupon number: MPNZ010

* This cannot be used in conjunction with any other promotions or corporate rates. And don’t forget to key in your QFF membership number.

Let’s just hope QFF wrings out enough goodies to compensate for our lost options.

If you’re looking for a deal, don’t forget to check our collection of other car hire coupons and discounts from Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz and Thrifty.

Deal coupons from the various car hire companies tend to blur together given how similar they can be. For example, you often have a choice of 3 or more companies at a time offering free upgrades.

BUT when it comes to the Gold Coast, we’ve gotta say, Thrifty’s one up on everyone else. They have some fantastic deals no one else offers. We checked, double checked, and indeed they are the Real McCoys – you can truly save if you intend on going to theme parks or other attractions that require entrance fees. Remember to double check all terms and conditions.

The Escape Pass Packages

Who?
These packages are a must-check for those interested in visiting TWO of Sea World, Warner Bros Movie World and Wet ‘n Wild Water World, and need to hire a car.

What?
These offers bundle a two-day car hire (adding on more days is possible) with a number of Escape Passes. An Escape Pass allows one to visit TWO of the three theme parks over a THREE-DAY period. The packages vary in terms of size of car and number of passes included. Larger cars are bundled with more passes.

2 x Adult Escape Pass and 2 day Economy Manual car hire for $238 – Check this deal

2 x Adult and 1 x Child Escape Pass and 2 day Economy Auto car hire for $326 – Check this deal

2 x Adult and 2 x Child Escape Pass and 2 day Compact Auto car hire for $415 – Check this deal

2 x Adult and 3 x Child Escape Pass and 2 day Intermediate Auto car hire for $504 – Check this deal

2 x Adult and 4 x Child Escape Pass and 2 day 8-seater Van Auto hire for $643 – Check this deal

We found the final prices are about $10-20 more than those listed above. Still, they present a real bargain.

Benefit?
You’ll save almost the full value of one adult Escape Pass – that’s about $119.99! Not too shabby. And our little side note: If you aren’t fussed about which theme parks to go to, get the most value out of the Escape Pass by choosing Dream World and Sea World (the standard adult entrance fee is $75 for each of these vs. Wet ‘n’ Wild which only costs $55).

Catch?
You’ve got to visit your two selected theme parks over a 3-day period. And most of these packages include child passes – so naturally, you need to have kid(s) to take advantage of them.

The Discount Booklet

Who?
For those who the Escape Pass is not appropriate but still want to visit the theme parks and/or check out other Gold Coast attractions and activities. A three-day minimum car hire is required.

What?
You’ll get a discount booklet from Thrifty which includes all sorts of vouchers valued at over $500. Among them you’ll find:

Buy 1 Get 1 Free adult entrance ticket for Movie World

Buy 1 Get 1 Free adult entrance ticket for Sea World

Buy 1 Get 1 Free adult entrance ticket for Wet ‘n’ Wild

Buy 1 Get 1 Free – 18 Holes at Putt Putt Golf Gold Coast

Buy 1 Get 1 Free Paradise Jetboating ‘Broadwater Adventure’

20% Off entrance tickets for Wildlife Currumbin Sanctuary for up to 6 people

And a bunch of other goodies

Get more information on the Discount Booklet

Benefit?
If any of these booklet’s activities are on your to-do list, you’ll be bagging some sweet savings.

Catch?
You may be tempted into doing more activities simply to take advantage of the vouchers! But hey, you’re on vacation after all.

Other Coupons and Deals

If these aren’t applicable to you, don’t worry. Check out if you can find other more generic car hire coupons that do.

There is a saying in Australia, when you hit a dirt road that it is made for 4WD’s or hire cars. Of course it is said in jest. Hire companies, with their 20 plus pages of terms and conditions combined with prominently displayed penalties are rightly a tad scary.

Most people therefore instinctively know that you cannot take your normal passenger hire car off road. But did you know that some hire companies also do not allow you to travel on any dirt roads in a passenger car or take the car to any island? The fact is that hire companies have quite a sizeable collection of ‘do nots’ contained within their terms and conditions. So in order to give you a straight answer to the question ‘where can I go?’ we have examined the documents and called the experts.

So where can’t you go?

Getting straight down to the detail, you are not allowed to take your hire car, regardless of make or model:

Off Road

It is against all rules, even in a four-wheel drive to take it off road. Most simplistically, this is any road that is not labelled on a map with a street name, including fire trails, paddocks and sand.

A normal passenger car with Avis and Budget will allow you go on gravel roads that are graded and well maintained, whereas the others do not. It is important to check this before you hire as many parts of Australia still have stretches of dirt road away from the major city centres.

Islands

Islands are completely off limits wherever you need to cross to them by use of a car ferry. This includes Bruny Island, Kangaroo Island and Fraser Island. Most companies only list these three main islands, however the rule applies to all islands. If you can’t get there by bridge or tunnel, you are not permitted to take your hire car there.

Kangaroo Island does however, due to its larger size, have two hire companies located on it. Both Budget and Hertz offer car hire for driving on the Island only, but ensure you acquaint yourself with their conditions. Hertz, for example, restricts driving to daylight hours only.

To or from Tasmania or Northern Territory

If you wish to hire a car in these locations, you need to do it from within Tasmania or the Northern Territory. For Tasmania, this is because you cannot travel by ferry. The Northern Territory, however, is restricted due to the massive expanse of desert you will need to travel through in order to reach a city. Thrifty also applies this restriction to Western Australia.

Streams, dams, rivers and flood waters

All companies restrict you from taking one of their hire cars into any amount of moving water.

Beaches

Beaches and sand, including any exposure to salt water is not permitted in a hire car.

With certain provision

The following are the grey areas, restricted by one company, but may be allowed by another. Before you do any of the following, ensure you have specifically covered it off with your car hire provider.

Drive above the snow line

This is permitted with Hertz, Europcar and Thrifty car rentals on the condition that their ‘snow option’ has been purchased. Avis and Budget’s terms and conditions both restrict taking the car to the snow. On contacting both companies, they indicated that a ‘few’ of their offices located near the snow fields may offer the option.

Above the snow line is determined in Victoria as above Bright and in New South Wales as above Jindabyne.

Note: Even with a snow option you are liable for every day’s car hire that the car remains away from the provider, regardless of reason, including being snowed in.

Within the Northern Territory

Each company has some restrictions relating to the Northern Territory.

All prohibit driving the road to Jim Jim Gorge and Twin Falls and on the Tanami Track. It is worth checking directly with the hire company if you plan to go outside the major cities as there are many restrictions including, for Budget and Hertz, no night driving in certain locations.

Within the Western Australia

Similar to the Northern Territory, WA has a number of restrictions. You should check directly with your car hire company if you want to travel north of Carnarvon. Most companies restrict this travel in its entirety, while others restrict the majority of roads and areas north of this point. Budget and Hertz both have restrictions on driving at night.

Within Queensland

Avis and Budget restrict travel west of Chilagoe (Highway 27), south of Normanton (Highway 1) and north of Karumba. They both restrict travel north of Cooktown and Cape Tribulation or travel west past Lakeland if you are in a passenger vehicle or truck. Certain 4WD’s may travel the coast road between Helenvale to Cape Tribulation or from Laura to Lakeland.

Although Hertz and Thrifty do not specifically list these areas, their restrictions on dirt roads rule out a number of these roads. Europcar has a tighter set of regulations restricting a number of roads including the Savannah Way.

Understanding the why?

Most of these restrictions are in place because the hire company can’t obtain insurance for that particular activity. If they can’t get cover, they will not provide it to the customer. This is particularly prevalent in the areas of car ferry travel and night driving (due to kangaroos). In addition remote areas are restricted due to the difficulty of vehicle retrieval.

Even though these restrictions are contained within the terms and conditions, you physically can still break the rules. Should you choose to do so, you will immediately become fully liable for ANY damage to that vehicle during that time, regardless of fault. For example if you took the hire car to Bruny Island then had an accident unrelated to the ferry trip, but which occurred later on the Island (hence the hire company will know you broke the rules), you will be liable for the FULL cost of repair.

Take the time when booking or when collecting your car to run through your travel plans, especially if it involves northern Queensland, Western Australia or anywhere in the Northern Territory, so you have a clear understanding of what is and is not allowed with your rental car. A little research beforehand can save you a whole lot of pain later.

Do you find yourself thinking that you have too many cards in your wallet, too many different loyalty programs and too many point schemes to consider? If so you probably feel you waste hours trying to understand the offers, when you would rather be planning the more enjoyable parts of your holiday.

Car hire is one such area, so we’ve taken a closer look at types of loyalty program tie-ups and point schemes you can find at Australia’s five major car hire providers – Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz and Thrifty.

There are two very different aims when considering programs and points associated with car hire. First is getting the best deal possible and second is getting the most out of that deal.

Getting the best deal possible

There are typically four types of discounts offered by car hire companies. These include:

Coupon offers, which are the large majority of the offers and change frequently,

Standing percentage discounts based on your membership to a particular organisation,

Loyalty discounts which are provided only to the most loyal and high-use customers, and

Corporate discounts, provided to companies and businesses.

Start your research by checking the available car hire coupons, which we’ve scoured each of their websites to compile for you, and in discount books such as the NRMA guide or Entertainment Book.

With your vouchers and codes ready, contact the car hire company. Mention to them any airline, auto club, hotel program and credit card group that you are associated with. Even if you are unable to get a discount, you can record the details for future point collection where applicable. Some providers only accept these details at the time of reservation.

Discounts may also be available as a result of membership with some international airline frequent flyer programs. All discounts are subject to providing proof on check-in.

Earning new points or miles

Each car hire provider is partnered with a large number of airlines and other companies allowing you to earn points or miles as you drive.

Australian Frequent Flyer Programs

Qantas offer three points per dollar spent on time or kilometre expenses (excluding GST, insurance and other such costs) with Avis, Budget, Hertz and Thrifty. This is extended with Avis and Hertz to provide 700 points for any international hire you make through these companies.

Virgin Blue is connected with Europcar and Thrifty only, offering a number of points between three and five per dollar spent based on your Virgin Blue Frequent Flyer membership level.

Australian Banking Options

Through Westpac Altitude and Qantas American Express, points may be earned by renting your hire car through Budget.

International Airline Partners

Every airline is associated with at least one of the major Australian car hire providers. However, there are so many airlines with differing reward points options that it is recommended that you contact your airline and ask who their car hire partners in Australia are and how it works.

If you have multiple frequent flyer rewards cards, you may need to compare the deal you receive. Make sure that you check whether the number of points is provided per dollar spent (as both the main Australian airlines do), per day (e.g. AAdvantage, United Airlines and Air New Zealand) or per rental, which is provided by most of the other airlines including the Australian airlines for international rentals.

Getting the best out of your booking

Check for discount car hire coupons.

Ask about discounts based on airline program, auto program, hotel program and credit card programs.

See if your international or local frequent flyer scheme is covered.

Compare each of your frequent flyer program offers to determine which is best, as you are only able to select one per booking.

If you are travelling on a corporate rate ask what points you are entitled to earn. Because the corporate rate is discounted, some hire companies do not provide any points or miles, while others provide a reduced number.

Are you driving in circles with your frequent renter program options but failing to get anywhere?

Loyalty programs are offered by all of Australia’s five major car hire companies, but at a glance it can be hard to determine if any are superior. So we set our research team to work to find you the answer.

What are the programs?

Each car hire company has its own branded frequent driver offer – Avis Preferred, Budget Fastbreak, Europcar Ready Program, Hertz #1 Gold Club and Thrifty Blue Chip.

Unfortunately the name is probably the most individual thing about them. Each program will provide you with faster reservations, record your preferences and ensure that you have priority over other customers who are not part of their program. With each, you will receive a card and a membership number.

Effectively by retaining your details on file, it speeds up the transaction time of both parties, thereby reducing administration costs over the long term.

Do they give me a discount for being a member?

The short answer is no. The programs do not entitle you to a direct discount in their own right. The best deal you can expect, as a result of being a member of their program is that you will be offered in most cases the best rate of the day. Being a member of the NRMA, an auto club, or Frequent Flyer program however may entitle you to a 5-10% discount depending on the car hire company. However, Avis and Hertz do offer the occasional member-exclusive offers like free days that can be better than the discount coupons available to the general public (Thanks Adam M.)

Most hire companies have a second or third tier of membership to which you cannot join, but must earn. This is similar to a frequent flyer membership where you can only progress up to the next level by travelling a certain number of times and distances. If you travel very frequently you may find yourself admitted to this group and therefore may become eligible for a greater level of priority, more upgrades and discounts.

Are there any other benefits of membership?

There are a few additional benefits to some memberships, which separate the quality of the programs.

Priority number
Avis, Hertz and Thrifty offer their frequent or priority members a dedicated phone line. The others direct you through to their standard reservation line which in some instances, particularly Europcar, can leave you waiting 10-15 minutes to be answered.

Priority service
Priority service is offered by all the providers. However in the cases of Avis and Hertz, this means no stopping at the counter at all within the main Australian airports, allowing you to simply proceed to the car.

Other features
Hertz goes one step further than the other car hire companies, in that they have a ‘no additional driver charge’ feature which is applicable on all their cars and provides a discount to gold members on the rental of infant or child seats. In addition, they offer their own points reward program so you can still achieve points even if you are not part of one of their affiliated frequent flyer programs.

Joining the program

Each programs is free to join, except Hertz, which is only free to Australian residents. The forms simply need to be downloaded from the website, completed and returned.

Be aware when selecting any preferences on your application form that this information will be automatically used on all your future bookings with that company. Should you need to change a preference, you will need to contact the company to update your details.

A final word

Because all the providers are similar, the choice of your hire car company is likely to come down to individual cost and features at the time you wish to travel. The only time this would not be the case is when you travel very frequently, then aiming for one of the memberships such as Hertz which offers an upgrade after 10 hires in one year, may be worthwhile.

There is no reason not to join multiple programs given they are free. The only investment is your time to complete the information required.

Finally frequent renter programs do not have to mean another five cards in your back pocket. Each provider confirmed that as long as you have your number available you do not need to physically provide your card. So if you choose to join multiple programs, save your wallet from exploding by creating one card with the names, program numbers and phone numbers on it.

Visiting Australia is not like visiting Vatican City. You can’t really see it all in a day. A year might not even be enough. It’s 4,000 kilometers from Sydney to Perth. Even the flight takes five hours.

So what if you want to experience Oz in all its diverse glory, from the other-worldly grandeur of Ayers Rock to the pristine beauty of the Gold Coast beaches? What if you want to smell the wax of the surfboards on the Whitsundays and taste the dust of the desert around Alice Springs? What’s the best and most rewarding way to get around this vast, country? Should you take to the air, or keep to the ground, fly everywhere or hire a car? To drive or no to drive? – that is the question.

If you’re heading on an Australian holiday and wondering whether to hit the road, here are some of the questions you should probably be asking yourself.

How Much Time Have You Got?

Have you got time to spare, or have you got a plane to catch? If you’ve got a limited amount of time, you’ve got to prioritize. What do you REALLY want to see? And how long is it going to take you to get there? If you want to see the Great Barrier Reef and take in Aida at the Sydney Opera House in the space of a week, driving isn’t really an option. But if you want a more focused holiday, you can fit in some of Australia’s most memorable sights on a road trip.

Some of Australia’s best and most spectacular sights are concentrated around particular areas. You can build your stay around Alice Springs and Ayers Rock, for instance. Or you can focus on Darwin and the Kakuda National Park, Melbourne and the Great Ocean Road or maybe Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef. Hiring a rental car and touring these areas is relatively easy, affordable – and hugely rewarding. Sometimes less is more, if you know what we mean.

Do You Want To Drive Alone?

Australia has an excellent road system that criss-crosses large sections of the country. Roads linking the major cities are especially good. So if you want to drive coast to coast, you can do it. (If you allow yourself a couple of weeks that is.) But the distances are huge and it can be a demanding – and a lonely – drive.

There are some other options though. It doesn’t have to be a lonely trip. You could join up on a tagalong tour, for instance. This popular option allows you to hook your car up with an official tour party and drive through Australia’s in convoy. Think of it as being a little like Mad Max, without the crossbows. There are some really great options available. You might like, for instance, to take the 25 day Kimberley Wander, north east from Alice Springs towards the stunning northern town of Kununurra, an oasis created by the waters of Lake Argyle. Alternatively, you might like to take an 11 day drive through the heart of the country and the Simpson Desert, heading from Broken Hill to Alice Springs.

Do You Want To Follow A Pre-Planned Route?

Alternatively, if you’re determined to do it yourself, you can make life less stressful by booking a self-drive package. This option takes all the pain out of planning a route, stop-offs, researching good bars, restaurants or hotels en route. A tour operator will give you all the directions, maps, schedules and even camping equipment you might need. It takes the heat off and leaves you free to enjoy the open road.

Are You Properly Prepared For Outback Driving?

Driving through the outback is an amazing and unforgettable experience. It will make you feel like the last man or woman on earth. You will experience a silence and isolation unlike anything on earth.

But it will take you through stretches of country where you won’t see anything other than heat haze, insects, lizards and the odd kangaroo for as long as a day or two. So you do need to bear in mind some safety pointers.

The main thing is that you need to make sure you are equipped for all eventualities. You need to plan petrol stops, make sure you have ample supplies of water, maps, shelter and digging tools in case of breakdowns. You need to tell people about your travel plans and carry at least one mobile phone with you. You must also be careful not to pick up hitch hikers.

Why Not Drive – And Fly?

The best way to see a large chunk of Australia during a relatively short visit may be to combine flying and driving. That way you get the best of both worlds.

There are all sorts of options. For instance, you could spend two days exploring Sydney, then fly to Ayers Rock. After a couple of days listening to the startalkers and experiencing the silence of Australia’s iconic natural wonder, you could fly up to Darwin. There you could pick up a rental car and drive through Kakadu, the breathtaking Katherine Gorge, Litchfield National Park and back. From Darwin you could fly to Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef. Alternatively, you could drive all the way across north-western Australia and finish your trip on the pristine beaches of tropical Broome on the west coast.

Of course, you could try any other combination. And you can take as much time as you want. If you’re not watching the clock then no one else is. As the Aussie’s say, she’ll keep.

It is hard to place a value on an icy cold drink in the middle of the blazing summer, but if you happen to be driving in Australia’s vast outback, the stakes are raised. Petrol stations come and go infrequently, and unless you are able to align your consumption to these scattered beacons it may be worth considering a car fridge.

Assessing your needs

Size and type

Before you dash out to purchase one, consider your specific needs. Are you happy eating at roadside petrol stations, but just need that ice cold chocolate bar and can of Coke on standby? Do you like to make your sandwiches in the hotel in the morning then picnic somewhere scenic? Do you have snacks packed for children to tide them over till you get to the next destination? Or are you planning a long camping trip away from civilisation?
Knowing how you are going to use your fridge will enable you to decide what functions you need, such as whether you need to freeze, cool quickly or even to heat?

Location

When making your fridge decision, you also will need to consider that it will need to be able to fit into your car or 4WD, reducing available luggage space. In addition the larger it is, the heavier it will be, are you planning on moving it?
In addition, consider if your fridge will be exposed to sunlight as a light colour will then provide better efficiency than a dark one.

Frequency of use

In addition consider how much you are going to use it, are you going to utilise it within your day to day life as well for your holidays?

Choosing your fridge

There are three different types of fridge available, thermoelectric, absorption or compressor.

Thermoelectric

The biggest advantages of thermoelectric coolers are that they are compact, lightweight, durable and portable. Generally they will run off both mains power and the cigarette lighter in your vehicle and you have access to a large range, from soft shell exterior coolers to hard shell family sized coolers.

Thermoelectric coolers run between 15 and 30 degrees below the ambient temperature and are quiet, environmentally friendly and some will even enable you to heat food.

The disadvantages are that they do not refrigerate as well as the other fridges, as they cannot get cooler than one degree Celsius and in hot weather where it may be 40 degrees the best the fridge will perform is at 10 degrees Celsius. Another disadvantage of the cheaper models is that because of their design, when the power is off, the fridge will actually draw heat into the fridge.

Prices range $50 to $500

Absorption

Absorption fridges are also called 3 way fridges because they can be run on gas as well as 12V or 24V, making them extremely flexible. They work by heating a concentrated ammonia solution and have the advantage that they are very quiet to run. The cooling is effective allowing you to achieve up to 35-40 degrees cooler than the ambient temperature.

The key advantage to absorption fridges is you can power them from the car while you are driving and then switch to power at a campsite or hotel, or switch to gas in remote locations.

However, there is a safety warning when using absorption fridges. If you power your fridge with gas, then it is essential that you provide adequate ventilation. Effectively you should never use gas to power the fridge within a motor vehicle, caravan or tent. In addition to this serious warning, absorption fridges are also power hungry using up battery capacity quickly and are designed to operate on a level surface (so no parking on slopes!)

Prices range from $350 – $1300

Compressor

The best thing about the compressor type of fridge is that it is superior at cooling allowing you to cool or freeze and in the more expensive models to segment compartments thereby achieving both. They operate on 12V but accessories can usually be purchased to switch to 24V if required. The power drawn is significantly less than an absorption fridge and allows ‘fast cooling’, a feature lacking in the other two models.

Unfortunately the compressor is a little noisier to run, but then it doesn’t put out heat, is not dependent on level surfaces and is safer to operate.

The biggest disadvantage however with the compressor is that is usually more expensive.

Prices range from $500 – $1800

Camp at the Kakadu. Experience Australia’s nocturnal creatures. Bag some cane toads.

Say what?

A rather unusual proposal is being mulled over by Darwin’s Lord Mayor Graeme Sawyer to recruit tourists on safaris to help bag toxic cane toads that have now overrun the area. No bounty is planned on being awarded so no pocket money there – simply a sense of satisfaction of helping cull the cane toad population that have reached epidemic proportions – 92 million in the NT according to Frogwatch (yes there is a Frogwatch) – and are threatening other wildlife.

While we’re personally not so big on supporting extermination programs of any sort, it certainly could be something new to append to your travels in the near future! WA already has been running such an event since 2006 called The Great Toad Muster. It goes on for a month beginning some time in September. Volunteers anyone?
