This is not exactly a car hire story but then Giant Pandas are the pinnacle of cute. Funi and Wang Wang, two national treasures the Chinese have graciously entrusted to Australia for the next 10 years, officially landed in Adelaide today and will be ready to receive fawning human fans from Monday, 14th December 2009.

Giant Pandas are an endangered species meaning they are at a very high risk of extinction, so wherever out of town you’re from, that’s two more very compelling and fuzzy reasons to drive out to Adelaide with the family. At the very least, that’s a little easier than flying to China.

And once the duo settle in, we’re keeping our fingers crossed Australia’s air works its magical love mojo on the couple (as it has recently on celebrities like Robbie Williams, Britney and Jordan’s cage fighter, although hopefully with more successful outcomes).

Adelaide Zoo is located right smack in downtown Adelaide so you can’t miss it.

To see the pandas, you’ll have to buy your admission ticket to the zoo and then book a time slot for Panda Viewing in advance from their website. A standard adult ticket costs $26.

You can find prices that beat Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz or Thrifty here, particularly in the selected months where they offer a 10% discount on all their rates (currently, this is on offer in June and July 2011). They offer Toyota cars from automatic Yaris hatchbacks up to a Tarago Van. The booking page is rather wordy with its terms and conditions but beyond that, it’s a simple booking form that does not require credit card information. Standard hires come with 200km/day (A$0.20/extra km). Located 5 minutes off-site, they can arrange for a complimetary pickup to/from the airport. Rentals come with a standard liability of A$3300 which they charge A$23/day to lower to A$330. Pricey. Instead, if you hire from them, choose to get covered with one of these other money-saving rental car insurance options.

• Finally, you can catch the public buses operated by JetBus. The airport is serviced by routes J1, J2 (both to city centre) and J7 (to eastern suburbs). The fare to the city is A$4.40 one-way.
